ANOTHER FACTOR THAT OUR COMPANY NEEDS TO CONSIDER IS THE COST OF THESE EQUIPMENTS

Well discuss this subject in the next book. :)

Configuring Routing between VLANs (Router-on-a-Stick)

Figure 12.12

* Scenario:

Lets take the scenario from up here. We assume that recently we have created a company called RoaS, and this company develops very fast. At first, we were organized in only one department, but with the growth happening fast, this design is no longer a scalable and secure one; so weve decided to split the company in departments (IT and Sales for now).

Each of these departments will have its own addressing space (/24) with the IPs 192.168.10.0/24 - IT and 192.168.20.0/24 - Sales.

Our purpose is for these 2 departments to be able to communicate between each other. Implicitly, they cant communicate with one another because a level 3 equipment (Level 3 Router or Switch) is required.

Another factor that our company needs to consider is the cost of these equipments. For now, we only have the budget for a Router because a Level 3 Switch is much more expensive. So, besides costs, we are also limited by the number of available interfaces on the router (usually 2-3), the only solution we have being to configure the Routing between VLANs with Router-on-a-Stick.
